A ship's eye view of the working waterfront

Nearly 1,000 people viewed the working waterfront from the deck of the Goodtime II during the Port's annual guided boat tours at Maritime Fest. The boat cruised down the Sitcum and Blair waterways, with views of several working vessels, environmental habitats and wildlife.

The Environment & Community

The Port of Tacoma’s landscape includes ships, containers, cranes, trucks and rail cars.

We honor a broader definition of “environment" - one that includes the people, businesses, culture and history of a place, along with its native species and natural systems. We live, work and play in a special place. We're committed to keeping it that way.

Environment: Sustainable spaces

The Port has invested millions of dollars in a wide range of cleanup and improvement projects in and around Commencement Bay. Port business is directed by our environmental goals, adopted by the Port Commission in January 2008. These goals outline our commitment to:

  • Protect land and water
  • Restore habitat
  • Reduce diesel emissions
  • Improve stormwater quality
  • Partner with community
  • Go beyond compliance

Community connections

The Port also strives to improve and serve its community. After all, we live and work here, too.

  • The elementary education program teaches students about international trade and its affect on their community.
  • Port Tours - by bus or boat - provide visitors with an up close look at Port operations in the Tacoma Tideflats.
  • Our speakers bureau connects Port staff, executives and commissioners with community groups.
  • Port partnerships with community organizations and groups support a wide variety of events and programs.
