Governor Gregoire today unveiled her final budget proposal for the state legislature.

As part of the proposal, the Governor articulates the importance of investing in the state's transportation system, including State Route 167.

"Washington’s transportation system forms the backbone of our economy," she noted. "Legislative action in 2013 is essential for maintaining and boosting Washington’s economic competitiveness."

With regard to SR-167, her proposal notes that "This project represents a critical missing link in the state highway network. Completion of the existing SR 167 will move freight faster and more economically as well as relieve congestion on local roads and other highways through new travel options."

The Governor, however, declined to propose a revenue package to fund SR-167 or any other transportation project. Rather, she proposed $1 billion wholesale excise tax on gasoline and diesel fuel to pay for K-12 student transportation services. Left unanswered is how critical transportation projects will be funded if transportation revenue sources are siphoned off to pay for general fund responsibilities like education.
