When the Port’s West Hylebos log yard failed to meet the state’s stringent water quality standards in 2010, we designed and built an innovative system to treat stormwater on the site and protect Commencement Bay.

The $2.7 million biofiltration treatment system completed this year mimics nature’s own filtering processes, using gravel, sand, compost and plants to remove pollutants from stormwater. The system measures 600 feet by 45 feet and filters stormwater through four stages.

The project recently won the American Association of Port Authorities Comprehensive Environmental Management award.
