While visiting the Port of Tacoma today, Gov. Jay Inslee met with the State Route 167 Completion Coalition to discuss possible next steps in the quest for a statewide transportation revenue package. He reminded the group of his commitment to the project.
"During every meeting I have around the state related to transportation, I always mention the need to complete State Route 167," he said.
The challenge, however, is persuading lawmakers to step up and provide the necessary revenue.
"Legislators are doing the 'Pothole Shuffle'," he said. "They say they support the project, but aren't willing to vote for the revenue that is needed to pay for it. What we need is the 'Leadership Waltz.'"
Local CEO John Parrott of Totem Ocean Trailer Express agreed with the governor about the need for revenue. "The reason SR 167 completion makes sense is the same reason why a statewide revenue package makes sense."
While the economic development benefits of the project have long since been established, Tim Thompson, lead organizer for the Coalition, noted that "SR 167 is overlooked for its environmental benefits: lower air emissions, better planning and less flooding."
Gov. Inslee summed up the need for a revenue package best: "Why do we need a gas tax increase? Because I believe Washington state is worth investing in."
