We have received reports of drivers traveling down the wrong lanes on Taylor Way and then swerving into the work zone to avoid collisions. This dangerous behavior could cause a serious head-on collision, increases the risk of injury to work crew members, as well as damage to equipment and vehicles.
Please direct employees, vendors, truck drivers and visitors to abide by the posted signs, traffic cones and detour routes, as well as, drive defensively to avoid these wrong-way drivers. Tacoma police activity will increase in the construction area to help.
In other news, the City of Tacoma has updated the web page for the Taylor Way Rehabilitation Project with updated construction information:
- Currently – Taylor Way from Lincoln Avenue to SR 509 will be reduced to two lanes, one lane in each direction. Two lanes will remain in place through 2021 (approximate time frame of re-opening roadway to three lanes will be posted based on weather and construction progress). Note, this section of roadway may be reduced to one-way flagger controlled or totally closed at night or over weekends. Weekly night work to begin in this section on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Saturday evening through Wednesday morning.
- Road Closures at Railroad Crossings (East 11th Street to Lincoln Avenue) – Work is planned at the first three rail crossings immediately south of East 11th Street on Taylor Way. Road closures will occur at one rail crossing at a time to provide access to adjacent businesses. The closures will occur from Saturday, Aug. 8, at/or around 6 a.m., to Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 6 a.m. Drivers should follow the posted detour route to access this portion of Taylor Way.
